Who is Dr. Samuel Alfano?
Dr. Samuel Alfano’s journey into the medical field began in the heart of Northeastern Pennsylvania amidst the bustling communities of Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. Raised in a household where compassion and patient care were paramount, he was deeply influenced by his mother, a dedicated nurse with over four decades of experience.
“She was very caring and accommodating to all and helped me to develop my love for patient care,” Dr. Alfano reminisces.
Despite initially considering a career in engineering and computer science, Dr. Alfano’s innate connection to the world of medicine persisted. In high school, he seized the opportunity to train as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), a decision that would prove pivotal in shaping his future. Working as an ambulance driver during his college years, Dr. Alfano found himself drawn to the intersection of healthcare and technology, a passion that would guide him through his professional endeavors.
“It was a perfect fit,” he said. “I was able to earn some extra money as well as utilize my training in basic life support. I owe my decision to become a doctor to one of the ER physicians who recognized that I had some talents and helped me to apply to medical school, and became a mentor during the early phase of my education.”
His medical journey began at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he earned his medical degree before completing his residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. For nearly two decades, Dr. Alfano practiced internal medicine and geriatrics with the Geisinger Medical Group, dedicating himself to the well-being of his patients.
Driven by his background in engineering and computer science, Dr. Alfano ventured into the field of clinical informatics, becoming one of the country’s pioneering physicians to be board certified in this emerging specialty. His expertise led him to roles as Chief Medical Officer at a community hospital in Reading, PA, and later as National Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer for Catholic Health and Crozier Health System in Philadelphia.
After years of administrative responsibilities, Dr. Alfano found himself yearning for a return to patient care. Joining VIPcare provided the perfect opportunity to merge his passion for medicine with a fulfilling lifestyle in The Villages.
