What Is Genicular Artery Embolization?
Chronic knee pain, especially from osteoarthritis, is often driven by more than just worn-down cartilage. Inflammation plays a major role, and inflamed knee tissue develops an increased blood supply through small vessels called genicular arteries. This extra blood flow feeds the inflammation, which in turn feeds the pain.
GAE is an image-guided procedure that targets these abnormal blood vessels directly. Using a catheter inserted through a tiny incision, typically in the groin or wrist, an interventional specialist navigates to the genicular arteries surrounding the knee. Tiny particles are then released to reduce blood flow to the inflamed lining of the joint. Less blood flow means less inflammation, and less inflammation often means significantly less pain.
Who Is a Candidate?
GAE is generally considered for patients who:
. Have knee pain from mild to moderate osteoarthritis
. Have tried conservative treatments (physical therapy, medications, injections) without lasting relief
. Want to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery
. Are not yet ready for, or are not good candidates for, surgical intervention
It’s important to note that GAE is not a replacement for total knee replacement in every case, but for the right patient, it offers a powerful alternative or a bridge that can postpone surgery for years.
